Project Labor Agreement signed for Honda/LG EV battery plant project

Members of Insulators Local 50 will be among the building trades members that will build the Honda/LG joint venture electric vehicle (EV) battery plant thanks to a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) signed between the joint venture company and the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council.

This $4.4 billion project could create an estimated 4,000 jobs for members of the building trades.

Construction on the EV plant will begin in early 2023, with initial timelines showing the work will wrap up late in 2024, with mass production commencing in 2025.

Honda’s decision to enter into a PLA was due to the company’s relationship with the region’s building trades unions, including Insulators Local 50, and the joint venture’s desire to ensure the skilled manpower will build the facility on an accelerated schedule.

Work to construct Honda’s Ohio assembly plants began 45 years ago, and the auto manufacturer has signed multiple PLAs to construct, maintain, retool and expand its operations in Ohio.

The plant, which will be located in 454 acres in Jefferson, will be the latest Honda facility where Local 50 and travelers will be tasked with critical construction work

The work performed by members of the building trades will be key to Honda’s decision for a net-zero carbon emission future. With extensive experience in commercial and industrial insulation, Local 50 members will install systems in the battery plant that save energy, reduce greenhouse emissions and protect Honda employees.

By 2040 Honda plans to produce only battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles in North America, and the Ohio EV hub will lead the way.

Besides the battery plant, Honda will invest in their existing Ohio facilities. This will include work to retool Honda’s Marysville Auto Plant, East Liberty Auto Plant and the Anna Engine Plant for the electrified future.
